NFL pundits didn't love the Carolina Panthers selecting Texas running back Jonathon Brooks in the second round.
However, the Panthers believe adding Brooks' versatility will make life easier for second-year quarterback Bryce Young.
As it turns out, a former Panthers quarterback also agrees.
In David Newton's ESPN article detailing how the Panthers plan to use Brooks in the 2024 season, Jake Delhomme went on record stating what Brooks brings to the table will only make Young's job even easier.
"A running game is a quarterback's best friend,'' he said, via Newton. "That's what wins consistently in this league. It even makes the defense better. … I for sure know I liked having DeAngelo and Jonathan [Stewart].''

It is a message that has resonated throughout the offseason for the Panthers. Every move the franchise made was about making Young's second season successful.
Carolina trading for Diontae Johnson gave Young a go-to receiver. Drafting South Carolina wide receiver Xavier Legette is the franchise's attempt to bring dynamic athleticism to the offense. Securing two good offensive linemen was an attempt to ensure Young isn't sacked nearly as much as he was during the 2023 season. Selecting Brooks was the Panthers' attempt to buck the NFL trend and stock up on players who can run the ball.
If the plan works, Young will be better for it.
