With the NFL draft now behind us and NCAA transfer portal activity starting to wrap up, it feels like the college football offseason is finally in full swing.
And that means that the season of power rankings is upon us. For the next several months, we'll see plenty of pre-season rankings and power rankings popping up on the internet.
247Sports, in fact, released some new post-spring SEC power rankings on Sunday evening.
And the Tennessee Vols are in the middle of the pack, coming at No. 7 in 247Sports' latest SEC power rankings.
The Vols come in just behind Missouri (check out 247Sports' full SEC power rankings here).
From 247Sports: It's always nice to have two of the top players in the SEC starting on each side of the football and that's the situation Josh Heupel is in with the Vols. Assuming Nico Iamaleava is the real deal at quarterback and James Pearce has another disruptive season on defense, Tennessee should make moves. The secondary could be worrisome since much of it's brand new and there are heightened expectations on the budding group of running back to assist Iamaleava and make things easy on the first-year starter.
This feels about right for the Vols, at least based on how last season went on Rocky Top.
The upside is there for Tennessee to compete for a spot in the College Football Playoff. As 247Sports noted, the Vols have game-changers on both sides of the ball in quarterback Nico Iamaleava and James Pearce.
But the Volunteers have to prove they're one of the top teams in the SEC before national media outlets like 247Sports are going to give them that kind of respect.
If the Vols start out hot in 2024 and earn early-season wins against NC State and Oklahoma, we'll see Tennessee quickly rise in everyone's SEC power rankings.
