The Philadelphia Eagles selected Toledo cornerback Quinyon Mitchell with the No. 22 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Days and even hours leading up to the draft, rumors spread that general manager Howie Roseman was planning to trade up to grab the best cornerback, but he didn't have to do that since the draft fell the way that it did.
A to Z Sports' draft analyst James Foster ranks Mitchell as the 18th-best overall prospect and 1st at the cornerback position.
Player Scouting Report from A to Z Sports Film Room's James Foster
Strengths:
- Was the best defensive back at the Senior Bowl
- Sturdy build with blazing recovery speed
- Elite ball production, 27 PBUs in his last 2 seasons
- Very disruptive at the catch point. Plays the ball with accurate & well-timed strikes
- Explosive athlete, quick response from off-coverage
- Good play strength to hold his ground & absorb contact down the field
- Fluid start-stop ability to mirror double moves
- Locks his eyes on the WR's hips & anticipates routes
- Active run defender
- Just 3 missed tackles in 2023
Weaknesses:
- Played almost exclusively off-coverage at Toldeo. 8.7% of snaps in press the last 2 years
- Flashed press skills at the Senior Bowl, but still needs to refine their technique
- Will open his hips to the sideline prematurely
- Struggles to mirror shifty/nuanced route runners
- Might need to play in a zone-heavy scheme with eyes on the QB
Mitchell (6-0, 195 pounds) is a solid pick for the Eagles who desperately need a young and pro-ready weapon in their cornerback room.
He initially boosted his draft stock at the Reese's Senior Bowl and then he raised it even higher at the NFL Combine after he ran a 4.33 40-yard dash.
Mitchell makes the jump to the pro level after three seasons at Toledo where he racked up 123 total tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, one forced fumble, one sack, 45 passes defended, and six interceptions. 37 of his pass breakups came in his final two years with the Rockets.
Mitchell becomes the first Round 1 cornerback from the Mid-Atlantic Conference player selected since the Tennessee Titans picked wide receiver Corey Davis at No. 5 overall out of Western Michigan in 2017.
He's also the first cornerback the Eagles have taken in the first round since 2002.
