Former Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban got dangerously close on Thursday night during the 2024 NFL Draft to admitting to tampering with a player that wasn't in the NCAA transfer portal.
Saban joined ESPN for the network's NFL draft coverage on Thursday night.
When the Philadelphia Eagles used the No. 22 overall pick to select Toledo cornerback Quinyon Mitchell, Saban mentioned that he was a player that Alabama wanted via the transfer portal.
Mitchell, however, never entered the portal.
"He was our No. 1 guy in the portal last year to try to get him to come out of the portal, and he would never get in the portal," said Saban (via 247Sports' Mike Rodak).
There's not enough information there to suggest for sure that Saban and Alabama were tampering, but I think we all understand the situation.
Tampering is happening everywhere in college football. Your favorite college program has likely tampered — yes, even if it's a Group of Five program.
But no one is actually admitting to it.
Saban came close on Thursday night, but his comment was open-ended enough that it can be interpreted in a variety of ways.
Nick Saban on ESPN this fall could be a good thing for college football fans. Who knows what kind of interesting nuggets he'll drop on live TV.
