The Tennessee Vols are now a "serious contender" for one of the top safeties in the 2025 recruiting class.
Rivals.com national recruiting director Adam Gorney noted on Monday that Tennessee, along with Georgia, is making a run at 2025 four-star safety Eric Winters.
Auburn has long been considered the favorite for Winters. But according to Gorney, Tennessee and Georgia are "charging up his list" and both programs are now considered "serious contenders" for the coveted safety.
From Rivals.com: Auburn has been considered the front-runner for a long time for Winters, who was excellent at the recent Rivals Camp Series in Atlanta, but Georgia and Tennessee are charging up his list and are now considered serious contenders as well. The Tigers still look strong for the Enterprise, Ala., four-star standout who might fit best at safety but other SEC programs are making a real push.
Winters, 6-foot-2/200 lbs from Enterprise, AL, is rated by 247Sports as the No. 6 safety in the nation and the No. 5 player in the state of Alabama. He's also rated as the No. 49 overall player in the nation.
Miami is also in the mix for Winters.
Last week, Winters told 247Sports that Auburn and Georgia are at the top of his list.
The Alabama native, however, is scheduled to take an official visit to Tennessee in late June. If that visit goes well, it could easily vault Tennessee to the top of Winters' list.
Of course, that's assuming the visit actually happens. Winters noted to 247Sports last week that he could commit before taking his official visits. And if he does commit in the next week or two, it could alter his official visit schedule.
