INDIANAPOLIS — Former Tennessee Titans safety Kevin Byard is being released by the Philadelphia Eagles for salary cap purposes, according to Adam Schefter.

Cutting Byard will save the Eagles over $13 million in salary cap space for the 2024 season. It also proves that Ran Carthon made the smart decision by trading him this past fall.

The Titans got a fifth-round pick and a sixth-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, as well as safety Terrell Edmunds in exchange for Byard.

Trading Kevin Byard was a difficult and complicated decision at the time. Not only were the Titans not out of contention when the trade went down, moving on from Byard had emotions attached to it.

Byard was the heart of the Titans defense for eight seasons. He was a leader in the locker room that younger players looked to for guidance. He was (and still is) an important figure in the Nashville community, and trading him was never going to happen without some criticism.

But with the way Byard played down the stretch in Philadelphia, and him now being released by the Eagles, I think it's safe to say that Ran Carthon made the right choice.

10 games with Byard cost the Eagles a fifth-round pick and a sixth-round pick. Philadelphia was 5-5 in those games. The Titans bottomed out, which would have happened with or without Byard, and acquired some much-needed draft capital for the new regime.

Credit to Ran Carthon. He got this one right. Hopefully the Titans can now convert on the draft picks they acquired. Maybe they can even call Byard again, who is now a free agent.
