Carolina Panthers legend Cam Newton finally addressed the viral 7-on-7 football fight video that took social media by storm.
In a Friday morning episode of Newton's 4th & 1 with Cam Newton Podcast, he apologized for the fight, while also offering some backstory regarding the circumstances that led up to the brawl.
"I don't want to point the finger and say this person said this and that person said that. It's all in the nature of sports," Newton said. "Am I saying this is the first time it happened or the last time it will happen? It's just something that—it starts with words, and it should have ended with words. That's it. And I'm disappointed in myself by letting it escalate to what it did. And that's why I'm apologetic.
"I've seen clips on clips on clips. I've seen the content that they've put out, or whatever. The truth of the matter is this: Me being in my position, I should've never put myself in that position. Because even then, it's like that s–t could've got ugly. Like, for real. It could've. And that's why I'm trying to bring the seriousness to the situation."
Videos first began circulating on social media on Feb. 25. It showed former coaches of Newton's jumping on him with others trying to intervene.
In a statement from TopShelf Performance to USA Today's Victoria Hernandez, TJ and Steph Brown, two people involved in the fight, were former employees of Newton.
Following the fight, Newton and everyone involved chose not to press charges, according to a statement from the Atlanta Police Department.
Additionally, the Atlanta Police Department said no one involved in the altercation was hurt.
Still, Newton believes he should have held himself to a higher standard.
