The San Francisco 49ers are still working towards hiring a new defensive coordinator, with another name confirmed as having interviewed for the job.

Per Matt Barrows of The Athletic, the 49ers interviewed Gerald Alexander, who recently took the role of safeties coach with the Raiders.

He joins Brandon Staley and Dave Merritt as the external candidates to have interviewed for the position. Nick Sorensen, the 49ers' defensive passing game specialist/nickels coach, and San Francisco's safeties coach Daniel Bullocks have also been interviewed by head coach Kyle Shanahan.

Alexander played alongside Bullocks during his playing career when they were both with the Detroit Lions.

He got his first NFL job as the defensive backs coach with the Miami Dolphins following a spell in the same role at Cal. Alexander left that role after the 2021 season before becoming the assistant defensive backs coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2022.

Alexander was hired by the Raiders in January but there is a chance his time in Las Vegas could prove very brief if he managed to leave Shanahan suitably impressed.
