Georgia head Kirby Smart announced on Tuesday morning that tight end Pearce Spurlin is retiring from football due to a congenital heart condition.
Kirby said that UGA's medical staff had been monitoring Spurlin's heart, and once he and his family found it was too much risk to keep playing, they decided that giving up football was the best decision for him.
“It was really a tough decision for him. We’re praying for him and his family,” Kirby told reporters. “He’s going to be fine. He’s out there right now with us helping. But there’s just too much at risk. So he will not be able to play.
“You hate it for the kid. He was going to be a really good football player. He got so much better during the season. But it was something we were monitoring closely, and it got to the point where he had to make the tough decision to give up football for the safety of his well-being.”
Pearce, a highly-touted 2023 recruit out of South Walton High School in Florida, fully committed to the Bulldogs back in 2020.
He appeared in six games in his lone season at Georgia, catching three receptions for 60 yards.
Spurlin took to Twitter/X to share a heartfelt message with the Georgia Bulldogs community.
"It's with great sadness today to announce I am medically retiring from football. I have a heart condition that my cardiologists monitor each year," Spurlin wrote. "This year's appointment showed something different, my margins moved into a zone of being high-risk playing contact sports. I always knew was a possibility and I feel like God graciously gave me a year of playing college football at the highest level on the number one team in America. That is something I will carry with me forever."
Pearce also thanked his parents, sisters, coaches, teammates, trainers and doctors.
He concluded his message by thanking his loyal Bulldogs fans.
"Although playing the game that I love is over, football and UGA will still be a big part of it and that I am very grateful," he wrote. "Thank you Dawg Nation for everything."
Kirby says Pearce will stay with the team on scholarship and help out in some capacity.
Pearce plans to "embrace" whatever new role that may be.
