The Kansas City Chiefs are set to send CB L'Jarius Sneed to the Tennessee Titans in trade pending a physical

Upon completion of the trade, the Chiefs will be in a much healthier spot in terms of their salary cap space. Kansas City had around $7.6M in salary cap space available ahead of the trade, which ranked in the bottom five of the NFL. It gave them few options to further improve their roster via free agency ahead of the 2024 NFL season.

After the trade is consummated, the Chiefs will shed Sneed's franchise tag, which guaranteed him $19.8 million for the 2024 season. That'll bring the Chiefs' cap space up to a respectable 27.4 million, which falls in the top 10 in the NFL.

How can the Chiefs use their newly acquired salary cap space?

The pessimists will say this trade is too little, too late. They'll say that free agency is over. The truth is that they couldn't be more wrong. Not only do the Chiefs have several of their own free agents who remain available, but there are also lots of good players who are still on the open market on both offense and defense.

Right now, the Chiefs should prioritize bringing back their own, with players like DE Mike Danna and LT Donovan Smith still available. They could use depth on the interior offensive line, and in the running back room, and they could even look to add another wide receiver. I wouldn't expect them to add much to the secondary unless they could find a veteran on a bargain.

There are also other routes if Brett Veach decides against a second wave of free agency spending spree. They could always trade for a player and sign them to a contract extension. They could extend an upcoming free agent like Nick Bolton, Creed Humphrey, or Trey Smith on a front-loaded contract. Ultimately, any cap space that the Chiefs don't use, they can roll over into the 2025 NFL season.
