You never know what NFL players truly go through during a given season.
Kansas City Chiefs second-year cornerback Jaylen Watson provides the latest evidence of that. On Wednesday, Watson took to X (formerly Twitter) to reveal to the Chiefs Kingdom that he played through the majority of the 2023 NFL season with a serious injury.
Watson says he suffered the injury during Week 2 of the 2023 NFL season. At that point, he'd only played slightly over 50 snaps between defense and special teams. He was given two options at the time of the injury, get the reparative surgery now or attempt to play through the remainder of the season. Over 570 snaps later, Watson became a two-time Super Bowl champion.
"Surgery was a success I tore* my labrum in Week 2!! Was given the option to get surgery or try to play the remainder of the season 5 months later 2x Super Bowl Champ!! A lot of discomfort a lot of pain this year but worth every moment"
If you go back and look, you can see that Watson wore extra padding on his injured left shoulder for the majority of the year. He played through the injury practically the entire season and came up with one of the biggest moments in Super Bowl LVIII, recovering a San Francisco 49ers muffed punt which led to a Patrick Mahomes touchdown pass to Marquez Valdes-Scantling.
I guess you can say that Chiefs fans are lucky that Watson chose to gut out those painful days and moments of discomfort because without him they might not be Super Bowl champions once more.
