The San Francisco 49ers have made another addition to Kyle Shanahan's coaching staff as they prepare for another run at the Super Bowl in 2024.

Per Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area, the 49ers have hired former Raiders offensive coordinator Mick Lombardi. Lombardi does not yet have an official title.

Lombardi's spell with the Niners will be his second. He was an assistant to the head coach under Jim Harbaugh in 2013 and then worked as an assistant on the offense in 2014 in Harbaugh's final season and the defense in 2015, Jim Tomsula's sole season as head coach.

He was retained as an offensive quality control coach under Chip Kelly before moving on to an offensive assistant role with the New York Jets. Lombardi, a former scouting assistant with the New England Patriots, was the assistant quarterbacks coach for Tom Brady's final season under center in Foxborough in 2019. A promotion to wide receivers coach followed before Lombardi joined Josh McDaniels in departing for Las Vegas.

Lombardi was the offensive coordinator as the Raiders finished 12th in points and yards in 2022. However, his time in Las Vegas ended when McDaniels was fired in October last year.

With his experience on the offensive side of the ball being predominantly focused on the passing game prior to his stint with the Raiders, Lombardi could be a replacement for departed passing game specialist Klint Kubiak, who left to take the New Orleans Saints offensive coordinator job.

Having got his coaching start working in a West Coast offense under Harbaugh but then transitioned later in his career to a Patriots attack that has its roots in the Erhardt-Perkins offense, Lombardi's coaching experience is diverse. As the 49ers' passing game continues to evolve around Brock Purdy. that could make him a valuable addition.
