The Buffalo Bills need to be more aggressive and make a big splash

It's been a relatively quiet free agency period thus far for the Buffalo Bills.

Sure they have taken care of their own by extending both Dion Dawkins and Taron Johnson- both of which were very good moves, I may add- but there hasn't been that big splash addition. And with Von Miller giving them a gift of a voluntary pay cut, one would think the Bills would have been more aggressive to take advantage of that with external signings.

Most notably, Buffalo has been quiet at their two largest positions of need- wide receiver and safety.

The safety market has been very team-friendly throughout free agency. Outside of Xavier McKinney, who got a four-year, $67 million deal, the rest of the safeties in this class of free agents have been affordable.

  • Geno Stone: 2 years, $14 million
  • Jordan Whitehead: 2 years, $9 million
  • Kevin Byard: 2 years, $15 million
  • Kamren Curl: 2 years, $8.75 million
  • Jeremy Chinn: 1 year, $4.10 million

All would have been very good additions for the Bills for very little money, and they signed a grand total of none of them. They hosted former Colt Julian Blackmon for a visit- they need to sign him. He's the best remaining safety on the market, and throwing multiple rookies with Damar Hamlin together as your safety is a recipe for disaster.

While the addition of Curtis Samuel was fine at receiver, and he could be a fun player should Joe Brady utilize him and find ways to get him the ball, Buffalo currently has Stefon Diggs and two predominant slot receivers. They need someone on the perimeter who can stretch the field.

The Cleveland Browns gave up two day three draft picks for Jerry Jeudy- the Bills couldn't have done that? They have seven picks from rounds 5-7. What player are they taking with any of those seven picks that would make more of an impact than Jeudy? Or Diontae Johnson, while we're on the topic of receivers. The Steelers traded him for a sixth-round pick and cornerback Donte Jackson. If Buffalo offered two fifths, I'd bet they could have had Johnson.

So now instead of having a potential receiver lineup of Diggs and Johnson/Jeudy on the outside with Khalil Shakir and Curtis Samuel in the slot, plus Dalton Kincaid at tight end, the Bills will likely have to go through the draft and hope they find someone as good as Johnson or Jeudy, whom they could have acquired for next to nothing.

Obviously, it's a long offseason, and moves can be made, but Buffalo has been far too passive thus far. If they want to finally break down the door and get to the Super Bowl, upgrades need to be made, and a splash addition needs to become a priority. Whether that be a trade for Brandon Aiyuk, Deebo Samuel, Tee Higgins, or, if we're dreaming big, Justin Jefferson, the Bills cannot afford to be passive any longer. It's time to get serious and, for lack of a better term, go balls to the wall.
