The Kansas City Chiefs becoming a dynasty over the past five years has put the team in the national spotlight.
Sports Business Journal announced their five nominees for the "Sports Team of the Year" award, with the Chiefs being one of the finalists. Other teams nominated for the award are Inter Miami CF, the Minnesota Timberwolves, the Texas Rangers and the Vegas Golden Knights.
Chiefs President Mark Donovan released a statement regarding the team's nomination.
"It is an incredible honor for our entire organization to be nominated for the Sports Business Awards' 'Team of the Year' because it represents so much hard work and dedication from throughout the organization," Donovan said. "Sports Business Journal has long been the industry standard for what is happening in the world of sports business. Similarly, the Sports Business Awards have become the ultimate recognition for the tireless work that goes into creating, innovating and pushing the envelope in this space. We extend our congratulations to the other nominees for 'Team of the Year' as well as all the groups and individuals that have been nominated across the other categories."
Some of the efforts by the Chiefs' organization that led to becoming a finalist for the award include:
- The team's eagerness to play in Germany in 2023.
- Their efforts in hosting the 2023 NFL Draft.
- Hosting high-profile non-game events at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.
- The team's social media growth towards becoming the fifth-most followed team in the NFL.
- On-field success such as playing in six-straight AFC Championship Games and winning three Super Bowls in five years.
If the Chiefs win the "Sports Team of the Year" award, it will be yet another notch in their belt as they ride the wave of dominance they have been on. There have only been 17 winners, with Angel City FC winning the honors last year. This year's winner will be announced at the New York Marriott Marquis Times Square in New York on Wednesday, May 22.
