The Vikings are currently in the process of cutting the roster down to just 53 players. The deadline to do so is 4 pm ET on Tuesday.

Several notable names have already been waived or released, and another notable player was added to that list this afternoon.

Per Tom Pelissero, the Vikings are waiving rookie RB DeWayne McBride.

The move comes after McBride failed to impress in the preseason. The seventh-round selection took 20 carries for just 70 yards. McBride did collect two rushing TDs, but otherwise failed to get anything going. I did not have McBride on my final roster prediction

The Vikings were hoping to see McBride break out and earn the RB2 role behind Alexander Mattison. Instead, it appears likely that the role will instead go to Ty Chandler. Fellow RB Abram Smith was also waived.

Mattison, Chandler, Kene Nwangwu, and Aaron Dykes are all still on the roster. Mattison is the starter while Chandler should be a nice change-of-pace back. Nwangwu, when healthy, will be the primary kick returner once again.

There has been no word on Dykes as of this writing.

It can be assumed that the Vikings are hoping to add McBride to the practice squad, if he clears waivers. It is plausible that a team could be enticed enough by McBride's speed and college production to take a flier on him.

We should know the initial 53-man roster shortly.
