The Cincinnati Bengals are constructing their first practice squad of the season and have landed on a quarterback in Will Grier.
Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, the former Dallas Cowboys QB is signing on with the Bengals' practice squad on Wednesday.
Grier was originally a third-round pick of the Carolina Panthers in 2019, the same year he last played in a regular season game. The Panthers let him go during final cuts in 2021 and was picked up by the Cowboys to serve as their third QB on the active roster. He stayed on Dallas' practice squad during the 2022 season.
As Schefter notes, Grier's last preseason game with Dallas was legendary. Grier scored four touchdowns and racked up 358 yards of total offense. It was the only QB performance that featured 300 passing yards this month.
“I can’t tell you how proud I am of Will Grier. I asked him to go out there & play his ass off," Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy said of Grier's amazing game. “For a pre-season quarterback performance, that might be the best I’ve seen since 1999 w/ Matt Hasselbeck.”
Signing Grier to the practice squad does indicate that Jake Browning is locked in as QB2 behind Joe Burrow, but Grier is exactly the kind of quarterback the Bengals need behind him and Joe Burrow. He should be able to push Browning for the backup job next offseason if he sticks around.
