The Kansas City Chiefs are continuing to tinker with their 53-man roster ahead of Week 1 of the 2023 NFL season.
When the team finalized their roster cuts on Tuesday, assembling the initial 53-man roster in the process. They've since made a pair of moves on the defensive side of the ball, showing that the roster is still a work in progress.
First, the team claimed Darius Rush, the Indianapolis Colts' fifth-round draft pick in the 2023 NFL draft. In a corresponding move, the Chiefs released DT Matt Dickerson, who had been dealing with a turf toe injury. We thought that he might be a candidate for a short-term injured reserve stay, but it turns out that Brett Veach had other plans.
The move is a bit of a puzzling choice from Kansas City as it doesn't leave the team with much prototypical three-technique depth on the defensive side of the ball. Right now, Tershawn Wharton is the only player on the roster with that particular skill set and body type. The rest of the defensive tackle group have bigger bodies and are more of the run-stuffing, two-down variety.
Ultimately, Dickerson could end up back on the practice squad in Kansas City. He was slated to join the practice squad in 2022 when he was waived during 53-man cuts, but he was claimed by the Atlanta Falcons.
