After being released by the Kansas City Chiefs during 53-man roster cuts, Shane Buechele will not be returning to the team. The former undrafted free agent out of SMU has officially landed with the Buffalo Bills on their practice squad after spending the past two-plus years in Kansas City.

The Bills, of course, are one of the Chiefs' main rivals in the AFC conference. They have a great starting QB in Josh Allen and a good backup in Kyle Allen, but they needed depth after Matt Barkley was placed on injured reserve with an elbow injury. They also could just be looking to extract any and all information they can about the K.C. offense from a player who has been in it for several seasons now.

Chiefs GM Brett Veach explained to reporters on Wednesday that the decision on Buechele was a tough one. Ultimately, they chose to keep extra defensive linemen, linebackers, and cornerbacks instead of a third quarterback on the 53-man roster.

"I think sometimes you have to make tough decisions; you know obviously Shane (Buechele) is a good football player and we loved having him around, certainly going to miss him. It was just one of those things where at the end of the day – we always say this to all the guys, at the end of the day make our jobs (hard) and put it on tape and that is where Blaine (Gabbert) came out and won the job. So, it doesn’t make it any easier because I think there was a lot of trust and belief in Shane Buechele, and (I) love him as a player but it wasn’t an easy decision."

Buechele had a Jekyll and Hyde type of preseason in Kansas City. Against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 2, he was a perfect 10-for-10 passing with over 100 yards passing and a rushing score. In the preseason Week 3 finale against the Cleveland Browns, he was 8-for-17 for 89 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions, including a pick-six to former Chiefs S Juan Thornhill

The inconsistency cost him against a hardened veteran like Gabbert.
