4 observations from Chiefs' first 53-man roster depth chart

The Kansas City Chiefs have released their first "unofficial" depth chart ahead of their Week 1 tilt with the Detroit Lions.
It's important to note that these are considered "unofficial" because they're not compiled by the coaching staff, but they're instead put together by the PR staff. They typically provide a rough estimate of where players will fall on the depth chart, but they're not gospel and can change at a moment's notice.
With all of that in mind, here's a look at the first depth chart for the 53-man roster:

Newcomers Neil Farell Jr. and Darius Rush
As to be expected with any new players, both Neil Farrell Jr. and Darius Rush are last at their respective positions on the depth chart. Farrell Jr. will play backup to Tershawn Wharton at the three-technique spot, while Rush will be the third man on the depth chart behind Trent McDuffie and Joshua Williams at the right cornerback spot. Expect Farrell Jr. to ease into the defensive line rotation early on. Rush is more likely to contribute as a gunner on punt coverage.
Punt return specialist depth
It's a bit surprising and also not surprising at all to see Kadarius Toney as the No. 2 punt returner behind Richie James. On one hand, the whole reason that Toney hasn't been practicing and playing during the preseason is a punt return drill gone awry. On the other hand, Toney's record-setting punt return in Super Bowl LVII isn't exactly a distant memory. He's a dynamic player as a return specialist, but I reckon he should be used there as Dave Toub used Tyreek Hill in the past, which is to say he's seldom used, but there always exists the threat of putting him back there.
Package players
Where Rashee Rice and Justyn Ross are listed on the depth chart suggests that they are, in fact, package players as Brett Veach suggested. Rice is a little higher on the pecking order than Ross, but I'd be surprised to see both get an outsized portion of snaps in Week 1. Andy Reid had this to say as far as game-day action for all seven receivers:
“We’re kind of going through all of that now," Reid said. "There’s a chance though that we have all seven up, yeah.”
Why isn't Chris Jones listed?
You might look at the initial depth chart and say to yourself, "Where the heck is Chris Jones?" Yes, he's not listed on the depth chart. But no, it's not some jab at the defensive tackle as he continues his holdout. When he was placed on the Reserve/Did Not Report list, it made it so that he no longer counts against the 53-man roster. Only players who are on the 53-man roster are reflected on the depth chart (it's why you won't find any practice squad players listed).
