The 49ers have a strong defensive line, but it has been light on depth for a while during training camp and preseason because of injuries.
On Saturday, the Niners lost another player from their defensive front, the team announcing it had placed former Cowboys first-round pick Taco Charlton on injured reserve.
San Francisco also waived rookie undrafted free agent running back Khalan Laborn and, in corresponding moves, added two defensive linemen to their 90-man roster in La'Darius Hamilton and Tomasi Laulile.
The 49ers signed Charlton back on August 1 and his immediate success in making an impression in practice had led to some talk he could perhaps make the 53-man roster as another reclamation project for San Francisco's renowned defensive line coach Kris Kocurek.
Charlton had a career-high five sacks with the Dolphins in 2019, the only season in which he has recorded more than three.
But Charlton will now to have wait to see if Kocurek can revitalize his career and turn him into a productive pass rusher at the highest level after the 49ers brought his season to a premature end.
