The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have done their best to play with their cards close to the vest for most of the Todd Bowles era.
Try as they might, most of the "secret" decisions that happen behind closed doors are a bit more transparent than the coaching staff would care to admit.
That is why it comes as little surprise to anyone that has been paying attention to Tampa's preseason that Baker Mayfield was just named the starting quarterback.
Again, not much of a surprise. Baker always made the most sense as the starter.
This coaching staff was never going to lean into Trask after the season that just happened. Todd Bowles is on the hot seat. Why would he not choose the guy that actually has NFL starts under his belt, some obvious bright spots in his career, and even a playoff win with one of the worst franchises in NFL history?
All of that seems more certain than a guy with no regular season reps after two years in the league.
The writing was on the wall from the start, especially when Mayfield didn't play in the last game, but you do have to hand it to Kyle Trask. He has played well enough in the preseason to earn some legitimate attention as a fringe starter if Mayfield starts to struggle or the ship starts going down.
However, it is officially Baker season in Tampa, and eyes are going to immediately turn to how he starts to gel with the 1s in practice and in the final game of the preseason.
It is going to be a tough year, but at least the Bucs were able to start out strong with the right decision at the most important position.

Not much of a surprise.
