Chase Lucas might have a shot to make the Lions 53 man roster

The Detroit Lions have a big week ahead of them. They're exactly one week away from the final cutdown day on August 29th. That gives a lot of guys exactly one week to get their spot if they haven't already. Lions Head Coach Dan Campbell spoke about the importance of this week on Tuesday.

I think, look, body of work goes a long way. But I'll say this, you string a couple of two or three really good showings back to back now, a couple of practices here like today's a big day, like we're going to be able to evaluate the heck out of today's practice. And then tomorrow and then the game, that can certainly catch our eye." Campbell said.  "Especially if we feel like it's been just trending in the right way. So yeah, I mean, we're not, you know, this didn't shut off for for a number of guys. I mean, we have an idea we feel pretty good about this is where we're thinking, but that doesn't mean our minds are made up either. So yes, absolutely. There's some guys that still have an opportunity here they could. They could catch our eyes."

Earlier this week we put out a list of five guys that we think need to have a big week before cutdowns. There's one player we didn't include and that's Chase Lucas. The Lions seventh round pick from last year is a guy that just won't seem to go away. Every time you think you've maybe forgotten about him, he just comes back out and does something that makes you rethink your position on him.

I did include Lucas on the Lions practice squad in our practice squad projection because I see the guy working out there. He deserves to have a shot.

"He's continuing to compete every day. You know, he's done some nice things. I feel like he's gotten better. But he is, he's fighting for a spot, you know, and, and I've, what I love about Luki is I told him this. He's the same guy every day. I mean, the way he comes into work, he's not up and down. He's got the same attitude. He puts in the same amount of work. He I mean, nothing changes. He's consistent. So he's, he's given me everything he's got right now. It's all you can ask."

Lucas has a shot becasue while the Lions have their secondary pretty well figured out, there's some depth spots there for guys that can play special teams. Plus there's an open spot now that it looks like Emmanuel Moseley will start the season on the PUP or NFI list.

I currently have Steven Gilmore and Brady Beeze occupying those spots in this weeks 53 man roster prediction. Both guys can be moved out of that spot if Lucas really pushes his chances over the hill this week.

Regardless of what happens with Lucas this week, there's something there with him and I wouldn't at all be shocked if the Lions figure out a way to keep in Detroit. We'll find out soon if that's on practice squad or the 53 man roster going into Week 1 against the Chiefs.
