The New England Patriots claimed nose tackle Marquan McCall off waivers on Tuesday, ESPN's Field Yates reported.

McCall arrived at the NFL last year as a surprise. In 2022, he signed with the Carolina Panthers as an undrafted free agent, and not only did he make the initial 53-man roster but actually suited up for 16 games, playing in 17% of the defensive snaps.

At 342 pounds and with 33-inch arms out of Kentucky, the second-year player has Patriot written all over him.

It'll be intriguing to see where McCall's run-stuffing style of play fits on the current group of defensive tackles. It's a deep unit where nothing will be guaranteed. Perhaps McCall can show the versatility Belichick craves in his defensive linemen.

What makes McCall's rookie season impressive is the fact that he's managed to overcome terrible athletic testing numbers. Per Kent Lee Platte's Relative Athletic Score, he scored a 1.03 RAS out of a maximum of 10

McCall could debut in the preseason finale in just a few days as New England will travel to Nashville to face the Tennessee Titans.

As a corresponding move to comply with the 90-player limit, the Patriots announced they waived wide receiver Tre Nixon with an injury designation.
