Cleveland Browns and restructuring contracts are just something that goes hand in hand.

For the third time in less than a week, the Browns have restructured a player’s contract. This time it’s TE David Njoku, who had his deal reworked. By making this move, the Browns opened up more cap space.

First, it was Joel Bitonio who had his deal redone, then yesterday the Browns did the same with star pass rusher Myles Garrett. Today, the Browns make the move with their athletic playmaking tight end.

By restructuring the deal with Njoku, Cleveland simply turns his base salary into a signing bonus, which lowers the cap hit. On the back end of the deal, there are void years added, which is why the Browns only make this move with players they see as a part of the long-term picture.

With $37 million in cap space, some may think the Browns are gearing up for a big move. I talked about that possibility here, but it is far more likely the team is rolling the money over.

A couple of bigger contracts kick in next year and Deshaun Watson’s cap hit goes from $19 million this year to $63 million next year. It is a significant jump and Cleveland wants to roll over as much space as they can to alleviate it.

General manager Andrew Berry and the Browns front office continue to fine-tune their books ahead of the 2023 season.
