The Tennessee Vols don't have great mathematical odds of winning a national championship or reaching the College Football Playoff in 2023 according to The Athletic.

But they have better odds than most.

Austin Mock, a sports modeling expert for The Athletic, developed a model that makes projections for the outcome of the national championship game and which teams will make the College Football Playoff.

Here's Mock explaining how his model works.

From The Athletic: About the model: I have developed a season simulator that produces odds for winning the national title, making the College Football Playoff, and winning conference and division titles. After every simulation is complete, I have developed a model that selects playoff teams. The playoff selection model is quite simple and very similar, in my opinion, to the selection process of the committee in that it creates a “resume strength rating,” which is derived from prior resume strength ratings, past playoff rankings and playoff selections for each season.

Mock's model gives Tennessee a 9.9% chance of reaching the College Football Playoff. The model gives the Vols a 2.0% chance of winning the national championship.

Tennessee has the 11th best chance to win it all this fall according to Mock's model. The only SEC teams with better percentages are Georgia (28.2%) and Alabama (15.5%).

LSU, a trendy pick to win the SEC West this season behind the play of quarterback Jayden Daniels, has a 1.7% chance of winning the national championship and an 8.6% chance of reaching the playoff according to Mock.

Missouri, oddly enough, is the next SEC team on the list with a 0.1% chance of winning the national championship and a 1.4% chance of reaching the playoff.

Texas A&M was the only other SEC team included among the top 25 teams. The Aggies have a 0.1% chance of winning it all and a 0.5% chance of reaching the playoffs.

Tennessee will play every SEC team included in Mock's top 25 title contenders this season except for LSU.
