The Buffalo Bills are about to have some tough decisions as NFL cutdown day is rapidly approaching.
With more questions than answers at some of the positions, I wanted to try my hand at the 53-man roster and take a stab at what the roster may look like come week one.
Here's my best guess of what the initial 53-man roster is going to look like when the regular season begins. Buckle up.
Note: Players with one asterisk (*) represent 2023 draft picks and players with double asterisks (**) represent 2023 undrafted free agents.
Quarterback (2)
IN: Josh Allen, Kyle Allen
OUT: Matt Barkley
Sean McDermott already said that the QB2 position is up in the air. This was a tossup between Barkley and Allen for who would be getting cut. Recency bias on Barkley's last preseason game had me putting him on the outside looking in. Don't be surprised if McDermott and Brandon Beane call in some reinforcements if Allen (Kyle) struggles as well.
Running Back (4)
IN: James Cook, Damien Harris, Latavius Murray, Reggie Gilliam (FB)
OUT: Darrynton Evans, Jordan Mims**, Ty Johnson
The Buffalo Bills recently brought in Ty Johnson, who has experience returning kicks much like Darrynton Evans. The usual suspects did enough to earn a spot on the roster in Cook, Harris, and Murray. Don't be surprised if a player like Mims winds up on the practice squad who can be called up at any moment.
Wide Receiver (6)
IN: Stefon Diggs, Gabriel Davis, Khalil Shakir, Deonte Harty, Trent Sherfield, Justin Shorter*
OUT: Dezmon Patmon, KeeSean Johnson, Isaiah Coulter, Bryan Thompson, Tyrell Shavers**, Marcell Ateman, Andy Isabella
It hurt my heart putting Isabella on the out list. He's been given an increased role throughout the NFL preseason and I was mulling back and forth between him and Shorter swapping places. Either way, the organization has a difficult decision on its hands as both players have been playing well thus far.
Tight End (3)
IN: Dawson Knox, Dalton Kincaid*, Quintin Morris
OUT: Jace Sternberger, Joel Wilson
No surprises here. Morris flashed in limited opportunities last season and with the addition of Kincaid, the team is going to be looking to run more 12 personnel sets. Sternberger was close in our eyes but with the team needing depth at other positions, he was a bubble player.
Offensive line (9)
IN: Dion Dawkins, Mitch Morse, Spencer Brown, Connor McGovern, Ryan Bates, O'Cyrus Torrence*, Ike Boettger, David Edwards, David Quessenberry,
OUT: Nick Broeker*, Alec Anderson, Richard Gouraige**, Kevin Jarvis, Greg Macz, Ryan Van Demark
The Buffalo Bills need to address the tackle position, there's no depth there. As for the rest, if we could keep 20 offensive linemen we would've. This unit is by far the weakest on the team maybe only to the middle linebacker position. The Bills have a blend of both young developmental players and experienced veterans with some healthy competition across the board. Don't be surprised if there are a few names added here before the season begins.
Defensive Ends (4)
IN: Greg Rousseau, Leonard Floyd, A.J. Epensa, Boogie Basham
OUT: Shaq Lawson, Kingsley Jonathan, Kameron Cline
Buffalo desperately needs Von Miller back and healthy. In the meantime, Floyd's addition is hoping to be a big one as the team struggled to get after the quarterback after Miller's injury. Rousseau is looking to make a splash and breakout this season and Basham and Epensa are going to have to have big seasons to keep their future with the team a possibility.
Defensive Tackle (5)
IN: Ed Oliver, Poona Ford, DaQuan Jones, Jordan Phillips, Tim Settle
OUT: Kendal Vickers, D.J. Dale, Cortez Broughton, Eli Ankou
Ed Oliver just got paid and is looking to take the league by storm. Buffalo got a positive injury update as Jordan Phillips has been removed from the PUP list and is hoping to take an important next step this season. DT is one of the stronger units on the team as they will look to wreak havoc on opposing offensive lines.
Linebacker (7)
IN: Matt Milano, Terrel Bernard, Dorian Williams*, Tyrel Dodson, Baylon Spector, Tyler Matakevich, A.J. Klein
OUT: Travin Howard
This is the unit with the biggest question mark coming into the regular season. After losing Tremaine Edmunds for the season and some rocky play from Tyrel Dodson, it's yet to be seen who will be the starting linebacker next to Milano once the season begins.
Cornerback (6)
IN: Tre'Davious White, Dane Jackson, Christian Benford, Kaiir Elam, Siran Neal, Taron Johnson
OUT: Alex Austin*, Ja'Marcus Ingram, Kyron Brown, Cam Lewis
We can't wait to see a healthy Tre White back on the field at 100%. Typically it takes an extra year for players to bounce back to their previous form. If that's the case, White is looking to make a run at All-Pro once again. The CB2 position is wide open with Benford, Elam, and Jackson all fighting to be alongside White. It'll be up to them to show the front office who is deserving of getting the nod at starting.
Safety (4)
IN: Micah Hyde, Jordan Poyer, Taylor Rapp, Damar Hamlin
OUT: Dean Marlowe, Jared Mayden, Zayne Anderson
The boys are back, Hyde and Poyer are healthy and looking to take the league by storm. Poyer surprised the fans by returning to Buffalo and Hyde, after nearly missing the entirety of last season, has to be excited to have his buddy back in the backfield. Taylor Rapp could be the future of the position and we simply could not cut Hamlin after his incredible story and what he brings to the football team.
Special Teams (3)
IN: Tyler Bass (K), Sam Martin (P), Reid Ferguson (LS)
OUT: N/A
A solid special teams unit to round out the bunch. McDermott loves his special teams guys and these three are going to play a big part in the team's success for the upcoming season.
Now, all that's left to do is wait and see how brutally wrong some of these picks were. Make sure to leave a comment and let us know what you think!
