The Philadelphia Eagles are doing everything they can to get back to the Super Bowl.

But that doesn't necessarily mean making blockbuster trades or big-time free agency signings. For teams trying to put together deep playoff runs, it's also about depth. That's why Thursday's news shouldn't be overlooked.

Per Aaron Wilson from KPRC2, the Eagles are extending offensive lineman Fred Johnson to a two-year deal. Johnson arrived in Philadelphia in November of last year as a practice squad signing shortly after he was waived from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

In his sixth year in the NFL, Johnson can be an important piece for the Eagles as he can play four different spots in the offensive line. This preseason, he's played most of his snaps at left tackle but has 12 snaps at right tackle, too. Below are his career snaps per position according to Pro Football Focus:

  • LT: 414
  • RG: 144
  • RT: 130

On the same day he got his new contract, Johnson was technically released from the Eagles. In reality, it was likely nothing but paperwork-related.

The Eagles play their final preseason game on Thursday as they square off against the Indianapolis Colts and Anthony Richardson. The Eagles have their own rookie quarterback to be excited about as Tanner McKee is putting together a solid push for Marcus Mariota's backup job.
