Kansas City Chiefs HC Andy Reid is not opposed to playing his starters during the course of the preseason. We've already seen this in both preseason Week 1 and preseason Week 2.
Other coaches around the league might believe in avoiding situations where their players could get hurt in a meaningless game. Reid has an old-school approach that has served him well over the years. He believes that in order to prepare for the upcoming season, players need to work during exhibition games. It's mainly because there are some things about the game that you just can't simulate during practice.
With the preseason finale on deck, Reid is expecting that his starters will see a little bit of playing time.
“Yeah, so the ones might get a little bit of time," Reid said on Wednesday. "I’m still working through that. The ones will probably get a little bit of time and then the twos and threes will take it from there.”
What about starting QB Patrick Mahomes? Will he be out there playing with his teammates on Saturday? If the decision were left up for Mahomes to decide, he'd play, and possibly advocate for the offensive line letting some defenders chase him around.
As for Reid? He's still undecided on Mahomes' playing.
“We’ll see," Reid said, met with laughter from the media.
History tells us that Mahomes might actually get some playing time in preseason Week 3.
Against the Minnesota Vikings in 2021, Mahomes and the rest of the starting offense played about two series before they sat for the remainder of the game.
Against the Green Bay Packers last year, Mahomes only took the field only to pay tribute to Chiefs legend Len Dawson following his death. He and Travis Kelce took the field to participate in "Choir Huddle" before taking a delay of game penalty and exiting the game.
Ultimately, it might just come down to how good Reid feels about the offense heading into Week 1 of the regular season. The Browns are set to play their starters for around 20-to-25 plays according to Kevin Stefanski, so it'll certainly be even competition if Reid were to play Mahomes and the rest of the starters.
