The Kansas City Chiefs will soon begin trimming their 90-man offseason roster down to 53 players for the 2023 regular season.
Brett Veach has several tough decisions to make by Tuesday, Aug. 29 at 4:00 p.m. ET. Those decisions will be informed by evaluations from the personnel department and the coaching staff. Where he won't be getting information from might surprise some people.
Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes revealed last week that he doesn't keep track of roster cuts, nor does he advocate for specific players to make the 53-man roster over others.
“It’s hard, I don’t like to follow it too closely," Mahomes told reporters. "I’m rooting for everybody. It’s hard to sit there and – you don’t want to promote for one guy to make it over another because this is people’s livelihoods, this is people’s lives. I let those guys, (General Manager) Brett Veach and (Head) Coach (Andy) Reid handle that, (Chairman & CEO) Clark Hunt everyone like that. They do a good job of finding the best players to put in position to have success."
It might be hard to fathom that Mahomes doesn't provide input, especially when he has so much insight into the offense. However, it makes a lot of sense knowing the type of teammate and person that he is.
In the spectacle that is the NFL, it's often lost that hundreds of players across the league will see their dreams come to an end on Tuesday afternoon. Even for the league's biggest superstar, it's a tough thing to watch. It's especially tough after building relationships with a number of teammates throughout the offseason.
"I don’t follow that too closely," Mahomes reiterated. "It’s hard for me I like all the guys in the locker room, it’s hard to see guys, even if it’s (just) for a moment, their dreams kind of get cut right there so it definitely is a hard day for everybody in this league.”
Mahomes may intend to get into ownership and management duties in the distant future. For now, he's content letting things play out as they do and being a good teammate in the process.
