The Vikings inked another key player to an extension before the 2023 season begins.
Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, the team and defensive back Josh Metellus have agreed to a two-year extension worth up to $13M with $6M guaranteed.
The extension backs up the reports we were hearing this summer about how impressive Metellus had been. New defensive coordinator Brian Flores runs safety-heavy schemes and loves defensive backs with versatility.
Metellus is a versatile defender who received some first-team action this summer in nickel packages. It's been pointed out that Flores often has three safeties on the field, so Metellus will contribute in multiple formations.
The fourth-year player has mostly contributed on special teams to this point in his career and was named a captain earlier this week.
Metellus is coming off his best season as a pro in 2022, finishing with 42 tackles, five pass defenses, and an interception. In 2023, the defensive back will still be a key special teamer and will also be on the field in nickel and dime packages.
With Harrison Smith and Camryn Bynum securing the starting safety spots and Lewis Cine and Jay Ward providing backup, this Minnesota secondary could suddenly become a strong suit in 2023.
