On3.com ranked the top 25 quarterbacks in college football after Week One of the 2023 season and Tennessee Vols redshirt senior quarterback Joe Milton didn't crack their top 10.
But he wasn't far from it.
On3 ranked Milton as the No. 11 quarterback in college football after the first week of the season.
Milton is the highest ranked SEC quarterback in their rankings. LSU's Jayden Daniels comes in at No. 13, follow by Arkansas' KJ Jefferson at No. 14. Kentucky's Devin Leary rounds out the top 15 (you can check out the full top 25 here.)
This feels like a fair ranking for Milton considering he didn't put up massive numbers in Tennessee's win against Virginia — though that wasn't necessarily his fault as the Vols' running game was working well against the Cavaliers. Milton completed 21-of-30 passes for 201 yards and two touchdowns.
The Florida native's final stat line would've looked much better had senior wide receiver Ramel Keyton not dropped a long pass early in the game that could've gone for a touchdown. If that pass gets completed, Milton throws for over 250 yards and three touchdowns and he's probably ranked a little higher on this list.
But there are always going to be some struggles early in the season. Keyton has been an extremely consistent player for the Vols over the last year. Drops happen. And that drop didn't come back to haunt Tennessee. That's a play that Keyton's made in the past and he'll make in the future — potentially at a much more critical time during a game.
It'll be interesting to see how Milton climbs these rankings over the next few weeks. A big performance against Florida on September 16 could send Milton soaring in On3's quarterback rankings.
