A major payday for Joe Burrow has been confirmed, but one of his primary receivers in Tee Higgins is still awaiting his turn. Fellow receiver Tyler Boyd expressed his thoughts on the matter after Friday's practice.

“He got the short end of the stick," Boyd said. "He’s worth a lot. They have to come up with some type of agreement. I hope they get something done over the next couple weeks. It relieves stress and has you more comfortable out there.”

While Boyd is well within his rights to defend his teammate, his choice of words is interesting. The Bengals have what many consider to be a tight-knit locker room and a strong culture. Claiming a player got the "short end of the stick" after another received a worthy contract sends a strange message.

Unfortunately for Higgins, and Boyd for that matter, a deal doesn't appear imminent. ESPN's Dan Graziano reported that Higgins' contract "might not be done anytime soon" considering a floor hasn't been set by either Justin Jefferson or CeeDee Lamb.

The Enquirer's Kelsey Conway also reported Friday that Higgins and the Bengals are not close on a deal.

Higgins has not spoken much about his contract this offseason, but he's made it clear ongoing negotiations will not hinder him from playing this season. He's not missed any practice time due to the process as well.

The Bengals have also been down this road before with Higgins' agent. David Mulugheta represents Jessie Bates III, who made his frustrations public back in 2021 when he was first eligible for an extension. His play during that season was clearly affected by the distraction of playing during a contract year, and the team eventually placed the franchise tag on him the following year. Bates left for the Atlanta Falcons this year in free agency.

It's looking like the Bengals and Mulugheta will once again come to an impasse, forcing Higgins to play without an extension to his name. They have less than two days to figure something out.
