The Miami Dolphins are bringing back a familiar face.

CB Jamal Perry, who was in Miami from 2019 to 2022, has re-signed with the team.

Perry was added along with WR Keke Coutee, with WR Freddie Swain and CB Mark Gilbert being waived.

Perry, an undrafted free agent in 2017 out of Iowa State, was with Miami from 2019 to 2022, with his role gradually decreasing during his tenure.  He started 6 games in 2019, one in 2020, and ended up on the practice squad last season.  For his career he's totaled 47 tackles, one interception, and 2 passes defended.

The timing of the singing, on its face, was concerning, given the injury suffered by rookie Cam Smith on Friday in the Dolphins' 19-3 loss to the Falcons.  Smith landed on his arm and was taken to the locker room with an apparent shoulder injury.

However, Mike McDaniel said on Sunday that the injury isn't expected to be long term.

"As far as his injury, we're fortunate, I think, that it's not long term at all.  With regard to his treatment and his body, the timeline is a little gray, but it's not long term at all," McDaniel said. "Next couple of weeks.  Could be sooner than later."

When asked about whether he's out for the rest of the preseason, McDaniel didn't rule it out.

"I couldn't even say that. The timeline really has to do with how his body responds, but those are still open for sure."

So while the timing of the signing seemed suspicious, according to the Dolphins' head coach, Miami's budding rookie should be back on the field sooner than later.  It likely means the team needs Perry for a few weeks as another player in the cornerback room while Smith is out, with Perry likely a potential practice squad candidate again after the preseason concludes.

Regardless, it appears that Miami might have avoided losing for an extended period of time one of their main candidates to replace Jalen Ramsey.
