The biggest win in the preseason is escaping games without injuries. Unfortunately, the Kansas City Chiefs didn't escape Week 1 against the New Orleans Saints without some attrition, and it comes at a position group where they're already missing a starter.

Chiefs seventh-round draft pick Nic Jones was ruled out of the game in the fourth quarter. Afterward, Andy Reid confirmed to reporters that he suffered broken bones in multiple fingers.

"As far as injuries go, Nic Jones fractured a couple of fingers," Reid said. "So we'll just see how he does."

A rookie out of Ball State, Jones has been one of the standouts of the rookie class during training camp. He's even earned repetitions with the first-team defense at times.

Asked about a recovery timeline, Reid didn't yet have one to provide to reporters.

"I don't," Reid said. "I'll know more in a few days here. We know that some of them are broken. Some of those you can cast up. Some you have to have surgery on."

In addition to Jones, undrafted rookie CB Anthony Witherstone suffered an injury to one of his big toes. It's unclear the severity of that injury.

The Chiefs are already missing L'Jarius Sneed and now the bottom of the roster is seeing its depth tested. This could quickly become a problem if the team has to deal with any more injuries in this position group.
