Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has made it very clear this summer that he wants to win another Super Bowl this season so his team can be described as a dynasty.
“I think we’re the beginning of one," said Mahomes earlier this week. "I think in dynasties, I always say you’ve got to win three. Our job is to do whatever we can to win as many as we can, not have any regrets when we step off the field."
The Chiefs will have to avoid a Super Bowl hangover if they're going to win back-to-back Lombardi trophies and kickstart the dynasty conversation.
And for that to happen, Kansas City will need to maintain their "edge" all season.
Fortunately for the Chiefs, head coach Andy Reid is already setting the tone for the season. And it's obvious that, like Mahomes, he's extremely focused and determined to win another Super Bowl this season.
"There are a lot of things that go into getting to the Super Bowl and all the highs and lows that go on there," explained Reid during an interview with The 33rd Team. "But again, I think our urgency level wasn't what it needed to be down the stretch there on that second [attempt to win the] Super Bowl — back [after] we won the first one. So the guys that are here understand that. The guys that haven't been here will understand that. You've got to maintain that edge as you work your way through that next season."
Reid's and Mahomes' approach to the 2023 season has permeated the team as evidenced by comments made by Chiefs offensive lineman Trey Smith this week.
Smith made it clear that no one in Kansas City's locker room is looking back at last year's success. Instead, they're focused on putting the work in this season as they move toward their goal of winning another Super Bowl.
"At the end of the day, we're always hungry," explained Smith. "We understand that even though we might have won it last year, no one cares. You know that's the reality of football, that's the reality of the game we play. No one really cares what you did the previous year. It matters what you put on the field this current year and what you show up and do."
This Chiefs team doesn't think they're a lock to reach the Super Bowl — or even the playoffs — just because of what they accomplished last season. And that makes them an extremely dangerous team. Considering Kansas City has the best quarterback on the planet and the best tight end in the league on their roster, about the only thing that can slow the Chiefs down is complacency.
But it sounds like there's not a soul in that locker room that's complacent. It's a hungry group of players that are ready to go out on Sundays this fall and show what they should be considered the next great dynasty in the NFL.
