Kansas City Chiefs undrafted free agent WR Nikko Remigio announced his presence with a standout performance against the New Orleans Saints in preseason Week 1.
The 22-year-old finished the game as the team's leading wide receiver, catching four passes on six targets for 71 yards. He had multiple chunk-yardage plays, including two passes where he had to adjust to the ball midair to make a play. The performance certainly caught the attention of those throughout Chiefs Kingdom.
Speaking to reporters following training camp practice on Tuesday, Chiefs second-round pick Rashee Rice was asked his thoughts about Remigio. He proceeded to warn the NFL that they might have made a big mistake by letting his friend and fellow wide receiver go undrafted.
"Nikko? Nikko Remigio, that's my boy," Rice told reporters. "He's been killing it. I mean, for him to go undrafted. I don't understand why, but he's going to show everybody why he should have been drafted."
Listed at 5-9 and 187 pounds, Remigio earned Second-Team All-Conference honors as a return specialist and receiver at Fresno State just a season ago. We already explored the possibility that he could be following in the footsteps of Chiefs legend and Bulldogs alum Stephone Paige.
His performance in preseason Week 1 and this stamp of approval from Rice only furthers the possibility that he makes it into the league.
However, there might be one minor setback that he'll now need to overcome.
Injury could sideline preseason standouts
The last part of Rice's comments about Remigio showing everybody why he should have been drafted might be put on hold. The undrafted rookie suffered a dislocated shoulder during practice on Tuesday. He was injured making an acrobatic catch during a one-on-one drill, which should come as no surprise after his preseason performance.
Chiefs HC Andy Reid confirmed the injury shortly after practice.
Depending on the severity, that injury could take him out for a few weeks or leave him needing surgery and a stay on injured reserve.
Nonetheless, Rice's comments are a very strong endorsement from one of the team's top draft picks. Whenever Remigio returns healthy, he should pick up right where he left off.
