Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes has a unique habit of sticking his tongue out when he throws passes.

Fans of the EA Sports Madden video game franchise are soon to be well aware of this fact. "Madden NFL 24" already includes some Mahomes-specific animations, such as his diving pass from Super Bowl LV. Apparently, they've also added Mahomes sticking his tongue out when he throws the ball to their repertoire of unique player animations.

Operations Sports' Steve Noah noticed the new animation and took to the website formerly known as Twitter to share images of it. Some of them look reasonable, while others make him look completely and utterly deranged.

There actually is some fascinating science behind the reason that Mahomes sticks his tongue out when he throws, just as some other great athletes have before him. Check out this excerpt from Science.org's Elizabeth Pennisi:

Twice, quarterback Patrick Mahomes has led the Kansas City Chiefs to victory in the Super Bowl, the pinnacle of U.S. football. Although most fans have their eyes on the ball as Mahomes prepares to throw, his tongue does something just as interesting. Just as basketball star Michael Jordan did as he went up for a dunk, and dart players often do as they take aim for a bull’s-eye, Mahomes prepares to pass by sticking out his tongue. That may be more than a silly quirk, some scientists say. Those tongue protrusions may improve the accuracy of his hand movements.

Apparently, the whole tongue thing might also be hereditary, too. Pat Mahomes Sr. used to stick his tongue out when he winded up for a pitch. Check out this photo from his stint with the New York Mets back in the day:

"Madden NFL 24" fans might scoff at this easter egg given the fact they've been begging for actual gameplay improvements. However, this attention to detail is certainly unique and welcomed. Who knows, maybe Mahomes will get a secret bump in his accuracy in the game when players get the tongue-sticking-out animation.
