The Kansas City Chiefs have officially wrapped up their 2023 training camp at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, Missouri.
The players have weathered the sweltering heat and Andy Reid's grueling training camp for another year, laying the foundation for their Super Bowl title defense season. The work they accomplished during this time will pave the way for the success they have between the hash marks in 2023.
What did we learn about the team throughout the course of camp? Below you'll find three of the biggest takeaways now that training camp is in the books:
The wide receiver group is better than expected with quality depth
There was no position group that had fans more panicked than the wide receiver position heading into training camp. For the second year in a row, the team lost their top wide receiver in free agency with JuJu Smith-Schuster heading to the New England Patriots. It left the Chiefs with a bunch of young and unproven players.
Yet, once training camp got underway, it quickly became clear that the team has a wealth of talent at the receiver position. Skyy Moore has taken a clear step forward. Richie James is fitting in quickly. Marquez Valdes-Scantling has continued to build upon his first year. The rookie receiver Rashee Rice might break some Andy Reid-receiver tendencies. It's not just at the top of the roster either. The performances and training camp highlights of undrafted players like Justyn Ross, Nikko Remigio, and Kekoa Crawford have fans doing mental gymnastics to figure out how to get eight or nine receivers on the 53-man roster.
Maybe it also has something to do with the guy at the starting quarterback position, but after training camp, this group doesn't feel like one that fans should worry about.
Offensive tackle might be a strength of the team
In an offseason where you move on from both of your starting offensive tackles, it's hard to imagine that you could come out on the other side of it better than before. That appears to be the case for the Chiefs after training camp.
Both Donovan Smith and Jawaan Taylor have fit into the system seamlessly, potentially even providing the team with two skill sets that better fit schematically. They've both been studs in pass protection and while there is some work to do in the run game, they'll improve there with more and more repetitions during the preseason.
The depth situation is surprisingly good too. Third-round rookie Wanya Morris has passed the eye test as a potential swing tackle option. Prince Tega Wanogho looks to have taken a step up in his development. The debut of international OL Jason "Chu" Godrick was extremely impressive. It's just another position group surprising when it initially looked like they could be a weakness.
Questions about the interior defensive line remain
The interior defensive line might be the biggest concern and question mark in Kansas City after training camp (and preseason Week 1). Chris Jones' holdout is still ongoing and there is no clarity on when it might end. Tershawn Wharton initially returned from the active/PUP list, but he's been absent from the past four training camp practices. It feels like they might have brought him back from the ACL injury a bit too soon. There is also the fact that versatile defensive lineman Charles Omenihu has been suspended for the first six games of the 2023 NFL season.
Filling in for both Jones and Wharton has been a 2019 UDFA out of the University of Kansas, Daniel Wise. The results in practice and the preseason have been rather uninspiring. On the other hand, former Browns first-round draft pick Danny Shelton has slimmed down and is playing some of his best football. Keondre Coburn has flashed in a big way during training camp. Still, the team needs to find a solution at the 3-technique spot and quickly, with the season rapidly approaching.
