If you were expected a holdout from Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow, you might want to get out from under the rock you've been living under.
QBs and rookies were the first to report to Bengals training camp Sunday afternoon. To the surprise of no one in Cincinnati, Burrow donned his practice jersey and took the field to get to work as negotiations for his contract extension persist.
Entering his fourth year in the NFL, Burrow is eligible to sign a long-term extension for the first time in his career. Talks between Burrow and the Bengals began as soon as possible in the Winter, and they will only intensify as the season draws closer.
The Bengals will prefer to get a deal done before the season begins, making the unofficial deadline September 9th, the day before Cincinnati's regular season opener against the Cleveland Browns. There's nothing stopping the front office from getting a deal done with Burrow during the season, but they rarely ever conduct that business when games are being played.
The clock may be ticking, but Burrow has been nothing but upfront about the process, and there were zero indications of him not showing up for training camp. In fact, just being at camp healthy is likely a relief for Burrow.
After COVID-19 disrupted his rookie offseason, Burrow's ensuing two training camps were impacted by his recovery from reconstructive knee surgery in 2021, and an emergency appendectomy in 2022. Burrow was able to make it through each camp healthy enough to start in Week 1, but he was clearly not himself either time.
Getting in as much work before September with a clean bill of health can allow the Bengals to start much better than they've had since Burrow first got here three years ago. The team has not started 2-0 in the Zac Taylor era.
Contract talks are not going to let Burrow compromise the goal of fixing that.
