The Sam Darnold press tour continues at its full-speed-ahead rate, and recently the rather pedestrian quarterback earned another believer.

NFL Hall of Famer Steve Young spoke on Darnold's talent on the 49ers Talk Podcast, where Young went as far as to tell the NFL world to stay awake when discussing the talent that Darnold possesses.

And the Darnold media cycle continues.

“Do not sleep on Sam Darnold," Young said. "Sam is as talented as anybody in the league in doing the things that we, you know the outward things like arm strength, mobility, and all this stuff. Again, he’s going to have to show that he has the force."

In 2022 with the Carolina Panthers, Darnold took advantage of the playing time given. He racked up 1,143 passing yards with seven touchdowns and three interceptions. The Panthers went 4-2 with Darnold starting, demonstrating that he can be a reliable passer and scorer when given the opportunity.

And there goes the Young comparison to Star Wars' force. Darnold has boatloads of talent, but he hasn't been in a situation where he can cultivate it. Young appears to believe that that situation may be in San Francisco.

Time will tell if that is really the case.

“If there’s anywhere, you’d want them to be, it’s right here," Young said. "If anyone I’d want them to be coached by it's Kyle, right here. We get to watch it play out. If anyone says, ‘I know what is going to happen’ I don’t think you could possibly know what’s going to happen right now.”
