The Raiders drama has dominated this whole offseason. They let Derek Carr go, signed a worse quarterback who is injury-prone, Jimmy Garoppolo failed the physical, and then there was the possibility Garoppolo would not be on the team come Week 1 due to a term in his contract.
In all honesty, they made the wrong decision from the get-go. They should have just kept Carr and built off of last year with the pieces they added in the draft and free agency. Instead, they don't know what will happen with their quarterback situation.
They are marked by their bad decision now, but they may be able to clear that out with a move they recently made. On Monday, the Raiders worked out and then signed All-Pro cornerback Marcus Peters, a former division rival.
This decision was a splash move.
The Raiders needed more than a little help on defense, and their worst position group was easily the secondary. Sure, they drafted some guys, like Jakorian Bennett and Christopher Smith, and signed some guys, like Duke Shelley and Marcus Epps, but there are still some holes.
That's where Peters comes in. Not only does he provide a veteran presence with some experience that isn't really on the roster, but he is also still a good cornerback. Peters was likely the best available cornerback left in the free agent market, either he or Byron Jones.
The Raiders did the best thing they could and still got better, and that's what counts. It's even better that the defense improved too.
Peters likely won't be an All-Pro again or even be a shutdown cornerback, as it has been a while since he has been that. The Raiders need a guy like him to play across from Nate Hobbs and to help teach Jakorian Bennett.
This move was perfect, and Peters, with his play style and personality, is perfect for the silver and black.
