Jets, Browns Preseason Game 1

The New York Jets and the Cleveland Browns competed in the first preseason game of the 2023 season in Canton, OH for the Hall of Fame game.

And it was the Browns who took home the victory, winning 21-16 over the Jets thanks to an interception by Cleveland safety Bubba Bolden with 47 seconds remaining.

Quarterback Zach Wilson got the start for the Jets, before being replaced by Tim Boyle in the second quarter. As expected, Aaron Rodgers remained on the sidelines, appearing to help coach and cheer his team on throughout the game.

As for the Browns, Deshaun Watson was sidelined, with Kellen Mond starting the game before being replaced by rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson.

Here are the biggest moments from Thursday night's Hall of Fame game:

1st Quarter

  • Zach Wilson hit receiver Malik Taylor for a 57-yard gain, ultimately leading to a FG.
  • The Browns got off to a rocky start as Cade York missed a 49-yard field goal to keep the score tied at zero, just five minutes into the game.

2nd Quarter

  • Israel Abanikanda showcased his speed, recording a 10-yard rushing touchdown.
  • First-round pick Will McDonald did not disappoint in his preseason debut, having many clutch moments. However, one of the most memorable was when McDonald made a tough tackle to prevent the Browns from getting a first down and instead forced a 4th and 1.
  • Jets' linebacker Chazz Surrat intercepts Browns quarterback Kellen Mond
  • Browns got on the board just 21 seconds before the half, with Mond connecting with Kelly for a three-yard touchdown pass.

3rd Quarter

  • Cleveland added another seven points, with Thompson-Robinson replacing Mond at quarterback and charging down the field. Demetric Felton Jr. scored a 16-yard rushing touchdown, doubling the Browns' score in the third frame.
  • The Jets saw a decline in the second half, not adding any points to the board in the third quarter.

4th Quarter

  • LIGHTS OUT: Right before the start of the fourth quarter, the lights went out on one side of the stadium, forcing the game to be delayed.
  • But don't worry, they came back on.
  • Browns took the lead after Thompson-Robinson located Austin Watkins Jr. in the end zone for a 22-yard touchdown.

Injury Report

  • LB Hamsah Nasirildeen was ruled out with a neck injury
  • CB Brandin Echols was ruled out with a hip injury
  • * Mekhi Becton limped off the field during the game, being replaced by rookie Carter Warren. ESPN's Rich Cimini reported later on that Becton was standing on the sideline with his helmet in hand, which Cimini called "a good sign."
