The Kansas City Chiefs have options.
Honestly, that's a good thing, even if the news that struck Friday afternoon was just what everyone in Chiefs Kingdom needed to eliminate their anxiety – or not. The Chris Jones holdout was already something that was in the back of everyone's head, and his mind games on social media with subliminal messages may just give someone a heart attack.
According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Charles Omenihu, the Chiefs' recent free agency signee, has been suspended by the NFL for the first six games of the 2023 season due to violating NFL's personal conduct policy. He is eligible to participate in all preseason practices and games, though.
Chiefs' Charles Omenihu is still going to be a steal
Omenihu is considered the second-best defender on the defensive line, as his experience and versatility help. He is a guy who can play inside on obvious passing downs, as he was actually more effective there, and plays outside at other times. Omenihu was one of the more underrated pass rushers in this past off-season's class.
Here is a list of the edge rusher last season who had a higher pass-rush win rate than Omenihu: Myles Garrett, Nick Bosa, Micah Parsons, Za'Darius Smith, and Trey Hendrickson. Per Pro Football Focus, his pass rush win rate is 20.7%, which is higher than Chris Jones' 20.4%, which was the highest at his position.
Omenihu was also in the top 16 in all players' total pressures, with 62. Just for reference, Frank Clark, the player Omenihu is technically replacing, was 37th in pass rush win rate at 13%. The former fifth-rounder in the 2019 draft is also just 25 years old, while Clark is about to be 30, so the replacement is perfect.
But now the Chiefs have to find a replacement for Omenihu for the first six games. As we mentioned earlier, they were ready for this. They have depth in the position, mainly because they knew about the potential of this happening.
According to Charles Goldman of A to Z Sports, this suspension stems from a violation of the NFL personal conduct policy, which stems from a domestic violence incident in January of 2023. Omenihu was arrested after allegedly pushing his girlfriend down following an argument. He'll miss matchups against the Detroit Lions, Jacksonville Jaguars, Chicago Bears, New York Jets, Minnesota Vikings, and Denver Broncos.
On the good side of the news, the Chiefs have several players standing out in training camp that play the same position.
Chiefs' young defensive linemen showing out in camp
Last season George Karlaftis had himself a great rookie season, possibly better than anyone thought he would. This year, he will be the full-time starter and would have been even if Omenihu wasn't being suspended. Those two would be the starters and rookie defensive end Felix Anudike-Uzomah would play that EDGE 3 position, similar to what Karlaftis did last year with Clark and Carlos Dunlap.
Now things are changing. Not only does Anudike-Uzomah have an opportunity to become the starter in his rookie year for the first few games if he can beat out Mike Danna, but some guys behind him now have opportunities to make the initial 53-man roster and possibly have roles on this team.
Joshua Kaindoh, a former Florida State defensive end who was drafted by the Chiefs in 2021, has had a challenging start to his career. In fact, he has played just three games, all of them in 2021. He has been on the practice squad for most of his career, but he may make the 53-man roster the way things are going. His name is being brought up a lot when it comes to pass-rushing situations in training camp.
Rookie edge rusher B.J. Thompson is a guy that has a chance, but he isn't being talked about as much as others. The guy that really needs to be looked at is Malik Herring, who is stunning people in the camp. His development is worlds different than this time a year ago.
"Oh yeah, today he played – you know he's playing a number of positions; we talk about Drue (Tranquill) being in different spots; if you look out there, Malik (Herring) is in a lot of different spots too in different packages," the defensive coordinator said of Malik Herring during training camp. "Here's a guy that's been here for a number of years, so he's heard it, so from the mental part, he's much further ahead than some of the other guys."
What is intriguing about Herring, as a potential replacement in a similar role as Omenihu, is that he also has inside/outside versatility. His size allows him to play both. Now, he can't stay inside during the run because he is a little small, but on third and long, when you need a guy to get to the passer, Herring is proving he can do it.
Sure, the Chris Jones-Charles Omenihu situations aren't great, and they likely give off some stress; however, the Chiefs knew this was coming, and they may be better prepared than you think.
