Things can quickly change in training camp and what once seemed a benign punting competition now has some juice after a big day from Green Bay Packers punter Daniel Whelan.

Whelan dominated on Saturday. Per reports, he was crushing punts on a consistent basis and looked like the guy who was named to the All-XFL team in 2023

Packers head coach Matt LaFleur was asked about Whelan's big day and if he has a shot to push incumbent starter, Pat O'Donell for the punter job.

"He's done a heck of a job since since we've gotten him and you know, he definitely has a big time leg and it's great," LaFleur told reporters Monday. "You want competition at every position, because it's going to push us to be better."

It's important to note LaFleur's enthusiasm in his response. Whelan is certainly on the Packers radar and will push O'Donnell throughout camp.

It's not like O'Donnell's contract will force the Packers into any decisions, either. He's set to count $2.375 million against the cap in 2023, but only $475k of that is considered to be dead money. Therefore, if Whelan wins the job, the Packers will save $1.9 million and eat just $475k.

In other words: it wouldn't be a hard decision to make.

There's obviously a long way to go, but from now on, everything these two do in practice will certainly have a hand in who ultimately wins the job.

Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love (10) participates during training camp Thursday, July 27, 2023, at Ray Nitschke Field in Green Bay, Wis.

But, things ramped back up for the Packers' fourth training camp practice on Saturday. So, without further ado, let's dive into the top developments. Injury updates A few […]
