Tennessee Vols head coach Josh Heupel generated some headlines at SEC Media Days in Nashville last month when he pointed out that Tennessee is "the real UT".
Heupel offered the remark in response to a question about Texas joining the SEC in 2024.
On Wednesday, former Vols offensive lineman Trey Smith, who is a starting offensive lineman for the Kansas City Chiefs, gave his take on "the real UT" debate while answering a question about his teammate, rookie defensive tackle Keondre Coburn.
"I've gone against Keondre a couple of times," said Smith. "I love Keondre. He's a great dude. Fun to be around. Extremely hard worker. We only disagree about Tennessee and Texas — which one is going to be the real UT. So we talk about that every day…..You know the real orange, Tennessee orange. Not that burnt orange stuff."
Tennessee will play Texas in 2025, which will be the Longhorns' second season in the SEC.
And between the debate over "the teal UT" and the Arch Manning storyline (Peyton Manning's nephew will be a junior at Texas in 2025), there should be plenty of hype for the looming showdown between Tennessee and Texas.
