Titans depth chart reset: Remaining needs after one week of free agency

The Tennessee Titans shook up their 2023 roster last week with six impactful additions in free agency.

Although fighting an uphill battle because of the team's salary cap constraints, GM Ran Carthon and the Tennessee Titans got busy during the first week of NFL free agency.

Tennessee targeted underrated free agents that were previously stuck further down on the depth chart of winning organizations but are ready to take on more opportunity. In total, the Titans have added six players that should all have an immediate impact on their 2023 team.

That said, the Titans still have some more holes to fill before they will be ready to go next season. Here's a look at how the current Titans depth chart shakes down one week into free agency.

QUARTERBACK

Ryan Tannehill

Malik Willis

With Josh Dobbs returning to Cleveland on a free agent contract, any speculation of him coming back to the Titans for 2023 was put to bed. Every indication right now is that Tennessee is prepared to run things back with Ryan Tannehill under center and put another year into developing second-year QB Malik Willis. What the Titans do from there is a complete toss-up.

RUNNING BACK

Derrick Henry

Hassan Haskins

Julius Chestnut

Jonathan Ward

While running back Derrick Henry has been rumored to be involved in trade discussions this offseason, Tennessee's face of the franchise is currently still on the roster. We can not completely rule out the possibility of a total Titans rebuild or Henry being a cap casualty, but the complimentary pieces added in free agency would suggest Tennessee wants to compete in 2023. That would mean Henry and Haskins stay put, and potentially another running back who excels in pass-pro is added.

WIDE RECEIVER

Treylon Burks

Nick Westbrook-Ikhine

Kyle Philips

Racey McMath

Mason Kinsey

Reggie Roberson Jr.

The Titans have work to do at wide receiver, which is by far their weakest position group at the moment. Robert Woods signed with the division rival Texans as a free agent, and Tennessee has done nothing but bring back restricted free agent Nick Westbrook-Ikhine. Treylon Burks is a future star, but in order for him to reach his full potential, the Titans need to add a few more weapons around him. The Titans could still go wide receiver in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft or target a veteran in an offseason trade.

TIGHT END

Chig Okonkwo

Kevin Rader

Thomas Odukoya

Justin Rigg

2022 fourth-round draft pick Chig Okonkwo is one of the best young tight ends in the NFL. His opportunity and snap count should only increase in year two as his role within the offense expands. The Titans lost Austin Hooper and Geoff Swaim to free agency, and will likely target an in-line blocking tight end who can compliment Okonkwo in this year's draft.

OFFENSIVE LINE

LT Andre Dillard

G Jordan Roos

C Aaron Brewer

RG Daniel Brunskill

RT Nicholas Petit-Frere

OT Jamarco Jones

OT Andrew Rupcich

OT Dillon Radunz

G Xavier Newman-Johnson

G Zachary Johnson

G John Leglue

Tennessee's offensive line got a complete facelift this offseason. Long-time left tackle Taylor Lewan and center Ben Jones were both released by the team and right guard Nate Davis signed with the Chicago Bears in free agency. Needing to fill four starting spots up front, the Titans signed Daniel Brunskill as a replacement for Davis and former first-round pick Andre Dillard to play left tackle. Tennessee also brought back Aaron Brewer, who was a restricted free agent and will presumably move to center in 2023.

Even with a series of moves on the offensive line, the Titans still need to find a starting left guard and add depth on the interior. I'd go as far as to say that three more additions via the draft and free agency will be needed.

DEFENSIVE LINE

Jeffery Simmons

Denico Autry

Teair Tart

Naquan Jones

Sam Okuayinonu

Curtis Brooks

Tyler Shelvin

Defensive line is one of the stronger position groups on the Titans' depth chart. Jeffery Simmons and Denico Autry have combined for 33 sacks, 67 quarterback hits, and 39 tackles over the last two season as teammates. Bringing back Teair Tart, who had a breakout season in 2022, gives Tennessee the depth they need in the trenches.

EDGE DEFENDER

Harold Landry

Arden Key

Rashad Weaver

Jayden Peevy

Zach McCloud

Harold Landry's return from ACL surgery is certain to give Tennessee's pass rush a boost in 2023. Landry's 12 sack 2021 season was the most by a Titans player since Jason Babin back in 2010. As a result, he earned a five-year/$87.5 million contract, but went down with a torn ACL before playing a game in 2022.

Rashad Weaver had a productive 5.5 sacks in Landry's absence last year, and the addition of defensive end Arden Key in free agency gives Tennessee all the depth they need to get after the quarterback with regularity. The Titans front four should be as good as ever next year.

LINEBACKER

Azeez Al-Shaair

Monty Rice

Luke Gifford

Jack Gibbens

Chance Campbell

Inside linebacker is another position group that is seeing a lot of turnover this offseason. Both starters from a year ago are no longer with the team after Zach Cunningham was cut back in February and David Long Jr. signed with the Miami Dolphins on a two-year/$11 million deal.

Ran Carthon called upon an old friend to be Long's replacement in former 49ers linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair, who will be a versatile and athletic piece in Tennessee's defense. 2021 third-round draft pick Monty Rice will step into a more prominent defensive role and presumably join Al-Shaair in the starting rotation. Special teams standout Luke Gifford and second-year linebacker Jack Gibbens will see an increase in opportunity as rotational pieces as well.

CORNERBACK

Kristian Fulton

Roger McCreary

Sean Murphy-Bunting

Elijah Molden

Tre Avery

Caleb Farley

Josh Thompson

Chris Jackson

The Titans added much needed veteran depth with the signing of former Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Super Bowl champion DB Sean Murphy-Bunting. The addition of a versatile SMB to the defense will allow Shane Bowen to move Roger McCreary inside consistently and play SMB opposite of Kristian Fulton on the perimeter.

Tre Avery, Elijah Molden, and Caleb Farley remain on the current roster as unproven depth pieces, and while it's possible a breakout season is on the horizon for one or more of these young defensive backs, the Titans needed the reliability that Murphy-Bunting brings to the table.

SAFETY

Kevin Byard

Amani Hooker

Shyheim Carter

Mike Brown

The Titans gave Amani Hooker a three-year/$30 million contract extension last year that is supposed to keep him locked up alongside Kevin Byard through the 2025 season. Assuming Byard returns, Tennessee is set at safety, but could add some depth in the late rounds of the draft or free agent markets to replace the loss of Andrew Adams and Lonnie Johnson Jr.

SPECIAL TEAMS

K Caleb Shudak

P Ryan Stonehouse

LS Morgan Cox

Ryan Stonehouse and Morgan Cox are locked into place for 2023. Last season, Cox made the Pro Bowl as the AFC's best long snapper, and Stonehouse broke the all-time NFL record for punting average as a rookie. The Titans should definitely be in the market for a kicker, though.

Tennessee released veteran K Randy Bullock earlier in the offseason, and while Caleb Shudak remains under contract in 2023, it would not be shocking to see the Titans fill the need with a more proven and reliable veteran or draft one of the top kickers in the upcoming draft class. Either way, they need more out of the position than what Bullock gave them over the last two years.
