The New Orleans Saints have been busy beefing up their defensive interior with Khalen Saunders and Nathan Shepherd, and they recently signed cornerback/safety Lonnie Johnson Jr. as well.

Coupled with Alontae Taylor, Paulson Adebo, and Bradley Roby, the Saints are pretty stacked at cornerback, but they seem to want more.

New Orleans held a private workout with cornerback prospect Cam Smith who is expected to be drafted sometime within the first two rounds.

Smith is not only equipped as an outside corner on either side but he can play in the slot as well. According to Pro Football Focus, Smith logged 196 of his 591 snaps in the slot in 2022 and allowed just eight receptions for 61 yards on 17 targets and one touchdown.

After playing in just two games as a freshman, Smith saw extensive time in his final three seasons with the Gamecocks. He logged 84 tackles, six interceptions, and 18 passes defended over that span which included a second-team All-SEC selection in 2021.

One of Smith's biggest tests last season came when South Carolina played Tennessee who had top wide receiver prospect Jalin Hyatt on their roster, and he was up for the challenge.

“I came in on Sunday. We already know what it was. I mean, we just seen Georgia do the exact same thing. So, we came I said yeah, put me on him. I want that. That’s what I love to do," said Smith.

Hyatt amassed just 65 yards in that game.

Smith has an impressive showing at the combine running a 4.43 in the 40-yard dash, a 38-inch vertical jump, and an 11'2" in the broad jump.

Smith doesn't have the biggest frame but at around 6'0" and with his speed and athleticism he's an intriguing prospect and would add immediate competition at the cornerback position for the Saints.
