Why the Saints needed to bring back Michael Thomas
The Saints had to do it.
The New Orleans Saints needed to revamp their offense. They're trying to do exactly that during this off-season.
They added Derek Carr, a four-time Pro Bowler, to be their quarterback. The Saints also re-signed Juwan Johnson after a great season last year. Now, they just signed Michael Thomas to a new one-year deal that helped out both parties.
It makes the most sense, considering the circumstances.
The two sides have been in conversations for months regarding the entire situation.
Thomas has wanted to return to the Saints, but his contract was quite the burden for the Saints. Once they turned to Carr at QB, though, Thomas knew that his best opportunity was in New Orleans.
The team also knew that they need a talent like Thomas in the lineup. Regardless of his injuries, he is still one of the most physically gifted and talented wideouts in the entire NFL.
His route running and ability to get open makes life much easier on a QB. The Saints need that for Derek Carr's start with the Saints.
Thomas makes the game much simpler for the offense, alongside guys like Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed. Those two take the top off of defenses consistently. Thomas can succeed with these pieces around him as long as he stays healthy.
The past three years have been grueling for Thomas, but he is ready for a bounce back. The Saints need it from him, too.
