Saints sign touchdown leader from last season
The Saints add a weapon on offense.
The New Orleans Saints are making sure they have plenty of offensive firepower for the 2023 season.
After agreeing to a one-year deal with wide receiver Michael Thomas on Tuesday, the Saints signed running back Jamaal Williams to a three-year deal worth $12 million with $8 million in guarantees on Wednesday.
Williams was a fourth-round pick of the Green Bay Packers in 2017.
In four seasons with the Packers, Williams never reached 600 yards or had more than four rushing touchdowns. He only started 20 of the 60 games he played in due to being the backup for Aaron Jones.
Williams signed a two-year deal with the Detroit Lions in 2021.
Williams was brought in to be the backup to D'Andre Swift, but he got a chance to shine last season due to multiple injuries Swift suffered.
Williams flourished as he racked up 1,066 yards in nine starts and led the NFL in rushing with 17.
The addition of Williams gives the Saints a very capable backfield with himself and Alvin Kamara. With Thomas and Chris Olave at wide receiver and new quarterback Derek Carr, the Saints will be tough to stop for opposing defenses.
