The Minnesota Vikings and running back Alexander Mattison have come to an agreement on a two-year deal worth $7 million, per Tom Pelissero. Mattison’s new contract can reach a maximum of $8 million and has $6.35 million in guarantees.

The Vikings were able to ink Mattison while trade talks centered around running back Dalvin Cook are reportedly ongoing.

Mattison, 27, has established himself as one of the top backup running backs in the NFL. In 2022, Mattison rushed 74 times for 285 yards and a career-high five touchdowns.

In his career, Mattison has compiled 1,670 rushing yards on 404 attempts and 11 touchdowns. He’s added 70 receptions for 526 receiving yards and three touchdowns in the passing game.

Mattison has done a fine job spelling Cook, whose production dipped in 2022. In four years with the Vikings, Mattison has registered just six starts. In four of those starts he has rushed for at least 90 yards, proving that he is capable of handling a starter’s workload.

While Minnesota continues to explore moving Cook, who carries a $14.1 million cap hit in 2023, locking Mattison up gives them stability at the position. Whether or not the team ends up dealing Cook, Vikings fans should feel confident in the running game with Mattison making his return in 2023.
